This third volume in the excellent series "Georgia State Literary Studies" is edited by an associate professor of English at Georgia State University in Atlanta. As Palmer correctly points out in his introduction, the major concerns of film theory have evolved from the narrative and linguist approaches of literary theory, and the book presents a range of critical methodologies including deconstruction, feminist criticism, and semiotics. The first section of the book presents a series of essays that use various theoretical models in analyzing specific films and filmmakers. The second section delves into the larger issues of modern film theory and includes two extended articles on the "translingistics" of the Russian theoretician Mikhail Bakhtin. Perhaps the most impressive piece in the text is the penultimate essay by David Bordwell, a sweeping reevalution of the field.
