摘要:In 1611, Thomas Coryat published observations of Venice, a travel guide which referred to the city as "the most glorious and heavenly view upon the water that ever any mortal eye beheld". This view of Venice as grand and luxurious has remained with us, but how accurate is it? In this programme we uncover the real Renaissance city, a place where not only people but furniture and clothes were hired by the day. We travel to the locations that coryat wrote about, exploring the difference between the public face of the city and the reality that lay behind it.
