摘要:Modern scholarship has revealed many hitherto unknown facts about the theater of the Elizabethan period. This knowledge, particularly the descriptions and reconstructions of the early playhouses, promotes a better understanding of the plays and provides an insight into their actual produciton. When students are able to visualize the production of a Shakespearean play they are studying, a new level of enjoyment of and appreciation for Shakespeare's brilliant work is achieved. This program presents the various elements that contributed to the performance of a Shakespearena play : the men behind the scenes, from the theater owners and playwrights to the stagekeeper, bookholder, and tiremen ; the actors on the stage ; and , above all, the physical features of the playhouse itself. The program's script is based on extensive research into the findings of noted Shakespearean scholars. the few quotations available on this subject from Elizabethan writers have been rsed, where appropriate.
