摘要:Avant garde art in Paris changed radically after World War I, with its horrors of trench warfare and poison gas. France suffered in a way that New York could not understand. There was a new kind of realism or classicim as art became more conservative and tied to traditions. Artists like Picasso and Matisse reverted to more traditional modes of painting and worked against their own innovations and experimentation. In this way they referred back to what was great in a nostalgic attempt to re-create the pre-war days.
