Fifteen years of theoretical research preceded Bernard Tschumi's architectural debut. He says that "architecture is not a knowledge of form but a form of knowledge; architecture is the materialization of concepts. This working definition of the discipline by a practitioner who is also a theoretician logically suggests that architecture entails "conceptual strategies rather than formal ones." Nonetheless, in the last 25 years Tschumi has compiled a body of work that, while testifying to the power of concepts, is also informed by striking visual clarity. Tschumi served as dean of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University for 15 years.
