"This little book is intended primarily for use in schools and colleges. The method used is an adaptation of the one usually to be found in manuals on counterpoint to the extent that the 'Five Orders,' and certain of their combinations, are taken as the practical basis of instruction. But no attempt is made to observe the arbitrary rules and regulations commonly laid down in manuals on 'strict' counterpoint. It is assumed that the student wants first of all to write plain, commonsense, harmonic counterpoint of the classical school, and the only rules prescribed are such as, in the author's opinion, will assist the student in this object. In the middle and later chapters the processes of melodic decoration and imitative counterpoint are explained, and any student who works conscientiously along the lines laid down should find himself adequately equipped, technically, to go on to the applied forms of canon, fugue, invention and so forth." --Back cover.
