摘要:In Tales of the Wars of Montrose Hogg continues the examination of Scotland's past he began in The Brownie of Bodsbeck, and continued in The Three Perils of Woman and Confessions of a Justified Sinner; in doing so he also reflects upon the attempts of Scott and Galt to deal with Scottish history. Using different narrators and different moods in each of the five tales that compose the work Hogg leads the reader into (and eventually out of) a period of anarchy and confusion in his native country. This new edition is the first to reflect Hogg's true intentions for the work, being formed on his own plan and following the text of his surviving manuscripts. The work thus revealed is a major achievement of final years, and a splendid portrait of Scottish society in a state of civil war.
