西西里島上的吉安加村有一座小教堂, 教堂前有一家電影院「天堂戲院」. 單親家庭的小男孩沙瓦托(小名多多)喜歡到那裡看放映師艾費多操作機器. 某天, 戲院大火, 幸好有多多帶著艾費多逃出火窟, 死裡逃生的艾費多因此失明, 將畢生所會的放映知識教予多多, 也和多多建立起一段深厚的情誼. 鎮上最頂尖的放映師青少年多多, 與美麗的女孩艾蓮娜墜入情網, 卻遭到女孩銀行家父親的反對, 艾費多鼓勵失戀的多多永遠離開家鄉. 一晃卅年, 遠到羅馬發展的沙瓦托(雅克貝漢飾)已是名揚國際的大導演, 直到聽聞艾費多的死訊, 才喚起他熱淚盈眶的兒時記憶...
