  • 摘要: This thesis aims to examine the question of the interrelationships between contemporary art and the display and consumption of goods. Stemming from the observation that a number of contemporary artists are using the language of visual merchandizing, display and advertising in their art works, this thesis looks back at the economic and social changes that took place in the 19th century Europe to reveal the framework that has shaped the way in which objects and artworks have been displayed over time. With a focus primarily based on the display window as site where objects are displayed and desire is constructed, it investigates the history, development and significance of this setting. The works of Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons and Josephine Meckseper are presented and analyzed in order to uncover the critical, social and theoretical implications of these works and their relation to other contemporary art practices and styles.
