This book presents the plans of seven architectural firms for a new central bridge in that most architecturally pioneering city of Rotterdam. The firms are those of Juan Busquets (Barcelona), William Alsop (London), Odile Decq & B. Cornette (Paris), Atelier Quadrat, Max 1 (both Rotterdam), DS Land-schaparchitecten and VMX (both Amsterdam). Bringing together texts by each of the participating architects, this publication examines the urban planning motivations for a new cross-river connection, and the significance, more generally, of bridges in an urban environment. The result is a series of seven original and also quite different views on what it means to connect parts of a city otherwise geographically divided.
