Gerhard Altenbourg, Horst Hussel :Werke im Museum Gunzenhauser

Post-1945 East Germany: two artists defy the dictates of official realism and unconventionally invent their own artistic worlds. Withdrawn into an aesthetic counterworld, Gerhard Altenbourg (1926-1989) confronts life in East Germany with a philosophical and psychological profundity and introspection, while Horst Hussel (b. 1934) responds to the sometimes ludicrous manifestations of the system with his bizarre sense of humour. Munich gallery owner and art collector Alfred Gunzenhauser met the two artists, friends since the late 1950s, in around 1960, and purchased many of their paintings, sketches and prints. On the 20th anniversary of the death of Gerhard Altenbourg and the 75th birthday of Horst Hussel, around 90 works of art are being exhibited and published for the first time in a joint show. Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, Museum Gunzenhauser November, 8 2009 - April, 11 2010.
