Attempts to provide a full account of George Sand's (pseudonym of Aurore Dupin Dudevant) theatre career and achievements, her writings on theatre and her actual theatre experience in both a historical and performance context and relates them to 19th century stage practice. On-site research at Gargilesse, and at Nohant, where Sand's private theatre remains intact, and examination of unpublished documents have provided much of the material.
